News Richard C. Moore, 57, of 405 North Main Street in Middle Point, appeared before Judge Charles D. Steele in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court today for what was initially to be a preliminary hearing, but turned in to an arraignment.

Moore was indicted by the Van Wert County Grand Jury on one count of aggravated murder with a firearm specification for alledgedly shooting and killing his adopted daughter Jessica N. Moore at 201 East Jackson Street on January 27, 2005.

Moore pleaded not guilty and his attorney entered a written plea of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. The Court ordered an evaluation of Moore and a pre-trial will be scheduled when the results of the evaluation are received.

Moore had bond set at $250,000 with the 10% cash option not to apply. Judge Steele also conditionally appointed a public defender for Moore until it can be determined whether he has sufficient property and assets to hire a defense.

If convicted, Judge Steele advised Moore the penalty for the offenses is 20 years to life in prison for the aggravated murder charge plus 3 additional years to be served consecutively for the firearm specification.

Moore remains incarcerated at the Van Wert County Correctional Facility.
